SPOTLIGHT ON KEN BILL
| I first met Ken and his mom, Donna Bill at an Autism Symposium about 2 years ago and I invited them to participate in WAVE programs. At the time, Ms. Bill indicated that Ken was shy, introverted, rarely communicated with anyone, had virtually no friends and did not participate in activities or sports. He basically stayed in his room and played video games. That’s no longer the case !
Ken and his mom began participating in our social activities as well as the life skills program. He developed confidence, made new friends and began to talk and interact with others. After several months in the program, Ken and his mom were part of the WAVE Community Human Services Partnership grant presentation. Ken spoke about the positive impact of WAVE, especially the opportunity to make new friends and have an active social life. Ken and his mom think that speaking in public was the turning point that gave him the confidence to move forward with his life. In addition to WAVE programs, Ken participates in FDOA recreation and sports programs as well as Special Olympics. Ken is also working on academics at WAVE’s Life Skills program and at the Teen Center, taking courses on Leadership skills and how to apply for scholarships. Ken also holds the position of Secretary on the Youth Advisory Board for the Teen Center. He’s an avid reader and hopes to attend TCC and FSU in the future. As you can see by the picture above, Ken is an active volunteer at Teen Court where he assists the prosecution and defense in adjudicating cases of juveniles that have pleaded guilty to minor offenses. Depending on his role that day, he argues to the jury (composed of teens) for the prosecution or defense. Way to go Ken, you’ve come a long way in the past 2 years and we’re very proud of you ! WAVE PROM
"Vicky Droze, WAVE Board Chair commented, "I had a blast", I hope that sentiment was shared by everyone who attended the first annual WAVE prom at the Elks Lodge. We want to thank the great folks at the Elks Lodge for hosting the prom. Kudos also to GT entertainment and to our photgrapher Scott Baxter for volunteering their time to help us with the event. Everyone seemed to enjoy the music and the dancing was awesome, especially the Conga line ! The gals looked beautiful in their prom dresses and the guys looked great in their tux's and suits. Thanks also to Gretchen Everhart staff for their support and encouragement, and to the volunteers who helped with decorations and clean-up after the event".
I've posted some pictures from the prom, enjoy and we hope to see many of you at the next event
WAVE Music Festival is a hit!
Many thanks to our families, volunteers, friends, musicians and Board members who assisted and contributed to the success of our annual fund-raiser this past Sunday at the Bradfordville Blues Club. Through your hard work and efforts we raised $5,000 which will be used to support WAVE programs. Special thanks to Gary Anton for allowing us to use the Bradfordville Blues Club free of charge for our annual fund-raiser and I can't forget to thank Chuck Husbands who has been cooking outstanding BBQ for us each and every year that we've had the event at the BBC.
Also, a debt of gratitude to Cliff Thaell for hosting the live auction and to all the great businesses in and around Tallahassee that donated items for our auction. I think everyone had a great time, the weather was wonderful and we had an outstanding performance by our WAVE chorus and the the musicians who volunteered their time to help make our event a success.
Thanks again to everyone who helped make our event a success. Click here to see pictures.

Life Skills Program Update - April 2011
The Life Skills Program continues to flourish at the First Presbyterian Church on N. Adams in downtown Tallahassee where students learn, grow and develop their skills. The curriculum is individualized and based on their abilities and skills and includes academic and vocational skills training including GED preparation, activities of daily living, arts & crafts, communication and socialization skill development and field trips. The program operates on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday from 1:00 - 3:30 PM. Fees are $35 per month for full attendance and $25 per month if the students attends one day a week. The program is led by our instructor, Ms. Jeanne Lancaster and her team of volunteers who work with our students.

Purpose, Philosophy and Goals
The Workshop for Adult Vocational Enrichment provides opportunities for social activities, community involvement, and life-skills training activities for adults and teens with developmental disabilities. Activities are designed to serve a broad range of abilities and preferences. Social activities include dances, swim parties, bowling, and hay-rides, to name a few. Life-skills training includes learning laundry skills by meeting weekly at a Laundromat and washing linens for local businesses as well as purchasing items at a grocery store which are then used at social activities. Our performing chorus meets weekly to practice and performs at various community events. Our goal is to provide opportunities for involvement as well as the support and assistance needed to make the activities accessible and a successful experience for our clients. It is our philosophy to provide services that enhance the ability of each individual to be an integral part of the community and to foster friendships so as to take part in a rich social life that most of us take for granted.BOARD OF DIRECTORS
